Waxing: the complete guide
Waxing is one of the most popular hair removal methods in the world. Quick, effective and accessible, it suits the vast majority of women and men. Whether it’s your first time or you simply want to know more before booking, here are the answers to all your questions.
From what age can you start waxing?
There is no legal minimum age for waxing. In practice, waxing is generally considered suitable from adolescence onwards — typically from the age of 15-16 — provided that a parent or guardian accompanies minors to their first appointment.
Teenagers’ skin is often more sensitive, which is why I use exclusively Perron Rigot wax — hypoallergenic and rosin-free, suitable even for the most reactive skin types.
Who can get waxed?
Waxing is suitable for the vast majority of people. It is appropriate for both women and men, regardless of skin type — normal, dry, combination or sensitive.
However, certain contraindications exist. I advise against waxing if you:
- Take anticoagulant medication or cortisone
- Have broken, irritated, burned or open-wound skin in the area to be treated
- Have significant varicose veins in the area to be treated
- Are undergoing Roaccutane (isotretinoin) or Vitamin A acid treatment
- Have recently had surgery in the area concerned
If in doubt, please contact me before your appointment — I am here to advise you.
What skin types are suitable for waxing?
All skin types can benefit from waxing. The key is to adapt the technique and type of wax to your skin:
- Normal or combination skin → hot or cold wax depending on the area
- Sensitive or reactive skin → hypoallergenic, rosin-free Perron Rigot wax
- Dry skin → careful moisturisation before and after the session
- Mature skin → adapted technique to respect skin laxity
At Institut Nô Stress, I use exclusively Perron Rigot French professional wax — a reference product recognised for its gentleness and respect for the skin.
How long does hair need to be?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions. For wax to grip the hair effectively, it needs to be at least 3 to 5 mm long — approximately 2 to 3 weeks of regrowth after shaving.
If your hair is too short, the wax won’t be able to grip it properly and the result will be disappointing. If your hair is too long (more than one centimetre), I will trim it slightly before the session for greater comfort.
My advice: avoid shaving in the 2-3 weeks before your appointment.
Is it painful?
Let’s be honest — waxing does involve a certain degree of discomfort, especially during the first few sessions. Pain varies depending on:
- The area being treated — sensitive areas such as the bikini line or underarms are more uncomfortable than the legs
- Your personal sensitivity — everyone reacts differently
- How regularly you wax — the more regularly you wax, the finer the hair becomes and the less discomfort you feel
With the right technique and the right wax, discomfort is greatly reduced. At Institut Nô Stress, I work with precision and speed to make every session as comfortable as possible.
How long does the skin stay smooth?
After waxing, skin stays smooth for an average of 3 to 5 weeks, depending on your natural regrowth rate. This timeframe tends to increase with regular sessions — hair becomes finer and grows back more and more slowly.
Unlike shaving, which cuts hair at skin level, waxing removes it from the root — hence a significantly longer-lasting result.
When should you wax? How often?
The right time: avoid sessions just before or during your period, when skin is more sensitive. Ideally, schedule your appointment mid-cycle.
The right frequency: on average every 4 to 6 weeks, depending on your regrowth rate. Over time and with regular sessions, some clients space their appointments out to 6-8 weeks.
Is waxing permanent?
No — waxing is not permanent. It slows down and refines regrowth over time, but hair does grow back. If you are looking for a truly permanent solution, electrolysis using thermolysis or blend is the only method recognised as permanent by medical authorities.
I am the only thermolysis & blend specialist in Luxembourg — do not hesitate to consult me to find out more.
Is it suitable for both men and women?
Absolutely. Waxing is carried out for both women and men. At Institut Nô Stress, I welcome a mixed clientele in a discreet, welcoming and non-judgmental environment.
The most popular areas for men: back, chest, shoulders, nape of the neck, eyebrows and ears. All these areas are available in my treatment menu.
Redness and irritation — is this normal?
Yes, this is perfectly normal. After waxing, the skin may show:
- Redness that generally disappears within a few hours
- Slight sensitivity to the touch for 24 hours
- Small spots or reactive follicles, especially after a first session
These reactions are temporary and part of the normal process. They fade with regular sessions.
What post-waxing care should you follow?
To optimise results and avoid irritation, here are my recommendations:
In the 24-48 hours following your session:
- Avoid sun exposure and UV rays
- Avoid swimming pools, saunas and steam rooms
- Avoid tight clothing on waxed areas
- Do not apply deodorant after underarm waxing
- Avoid perfumes and alcohol-based products on the area
To maintain results:
- Moisturise your skin daily
- Gently exfoliate 1 to 2 times per week from day 3 onwards to prevent ingrown hairs
FAQ — Frequently asked questions
Can I get waxed during pregnancy? Yes, subject to your doctor’s approval. Skin is often more sensitive during pregnancy — I adapt accordingly.
Can I get waxed if I have dark skin? Yes, waxing is suitable for all skin tones and phototypes, unlike laser or IPL hair removal.
Can I get waxed in summer? Yes, but avoid any sun exposure in the 48 hours before and after your session.
Can wax cause allergies? This is rare with the Perron Rigot wax I use, as it is rosin-free — the most common allergen. If you have a history of allergies, please let me know before your session.
How much does a waxing session cost at Institut Nô Stress? Prices start from €17 for small areas (eyebrows, upper lip) and vary depending on the area treated. Find all my prices on the dedicated page.
